Common Question: What is a "Warfare Device" or "Breast Insignia"? When a person has an acronym (SW) or (FMF/SW), etc. within his/her rank title.   

Example: BMC(SW) John E. Popeye -The "(SW)" means Surface Warfare qualified. In the photo's below, that would be the silver ship pin on some pieces above/or below the recipients rank.

Air Warfare (AW) for example, would be the silver design with wings on each side. IF someone had both designators or more, it would look like BMC(SW/AW) John E. Popeye. I hope this helps!  If you do not know what they mean, don't worry - I do!  The Master Chief.
